 A Special Commission

The Journey of Richard and Debby

This quilt was a special commission for some friends. It started with a rough sketch of the general idea and specified that there be certain objects incorporated in the quilt.

The image was to have a Pink Floyd Image with the local light house, bridges and sound ferry. The sky was to be a Maxwell Parrish pink sky.

The mountains were Mammoth with their ski lifts and two small boy and girl angels hidden in the trees.

This shot shows the Mt Reiner and the beading and Swarovski crystals.

A Personal Quilt

           Sea Grape Harbor

This quilt was made for my
Sister in Law, Wendy Rex. It was a large quilt about 4' x 4'. I created the quilt from my imagination. The sea grapes leaves were three dimensional.

Inserted on the quilt were various sea birds that were favorites of Wendy.

The beach had star fishes and various sea shells .

This image shows some of the beading that was incorporated in the quilt. Also the three dimensional sea grapes are shown in this image.

English Paper Piecing

                 Mandala Magic

This is a large piece 60" x 60" inches.  Each of the pieces was wrapped around a piece of paper and secured with glue. Then the pieces were hand whipped stitched together. It took a long time to complete this project.  Almost a year,

 Under Sea Queen

A self portrait I did for an Art group I am in.
It was small. 12" x 14" inches.

 Seahorse Ebba

The design was a Laura Heine creation. This seahorse was first done on a film, The cartoon of the seahorse was underneath the film. Then the motifs were added to the design . The motifs had adhesive on the reverse side. Size 23X42. It was fun picking out the different motifs I wanted to use.

Fall Leaves

This panel was done from an experiment using bleach and black cloth. The leaves were laid on the black fabric and sprayed with bleach, Every black fabric comes out a different color. In this case the result was a rusty orange. I then appliqued some leaves on top of the silhouette.

This is a detail of the quilt showing the beading of the leaves. Some of the leaves were done with Swarovrski crystals and some were done with hand beading. The quilt was donated to the International Aphasia Movement.

Kake-Jiku

 Hanging Scrolls

The inspiration for this quilt came from a book. Kake - Jiku, or hanging scrolls. They were the beautiful scrolls found in many Japanese homes. A long piece of Japanese paper or silk onto which a work of calligraphy or a piece of art work was mounted.

There were 15 designs that were reminiscent of the hanging scrolls. All of the designs were created using applique. Some feature fabric origami, where two pieces were sewn together and folded into shapes of three-dimensional flowers. Other designs use Sashiko, a Japanese version of a quilting stitch.

I worked on this quilt for the year of Covid 19. It was my "Go To" project that kept me going.

Some of the blocks on my design wall.

This block featured little origami flowers.

○Gig Harbor View

Gig Harbor - Commencement Bay, WA

This was our view at night from the bedroom window. The scene was made on a piece of marbleized fabric. Many of the communities are different types of  beads. The houses on the hillside were made with square sequins. The trees were done as silhouettes.

The ferry boat and barge with the tug boat were done entirely with hand beading. The piece was free-motion quilted. The piece measures 24" by 42".

 Under the Sea

This quilt hung on my design wall for several years. It took the pandemic for me to finally complete it. It is a large piece measuring 42" x 72".

I have always loved the sea and this was an opportunity for me to incorporate all the wonders under sea.

The embellishments and beading were done by hand.  This is an original design.

Koi PondA small study in color .

Harbor Reflections

This panel was a free motion quilting experiment. The piece was done by Norm Olson for Northcott.

Summers Solstice

Wool applique piece done by hand. Embellishments and beading were also done by hand.
The piece is 30" x30" inches .

Humming Birds

This wall hanging was made from a panel that had humming birds featured on it. I also made placemats that featured each humming bird.

Sashiko Rows

The final bedspread made out of the Sashiko Squares. I used the indigo blue and white fabrics that I had collected in my stash over the years to make the rows.
Then I incorporated the blocks into the quilt.
The blocks had applique red dots on them. There were many different sashiko panels. Some were 8" squares , some 3" squares
and some were long ribbons of design.

The back art on it; was of the left over blocks
that I could not part with.

The back shows the quilting motif of snow blossoms.

The Gig Harbor Quilt

This quilt was done from same cartoon that the split quilt was made from.
It is much smaller  (24" x 24" ) and has different color scheme. It has borders and a flap binding. The water reflections were done with Angelina fibers.

Sachiko

Some examples of sachiko blocks done during our southern California vacation. I made them as they were small and could done in the car. I plan to make them into a quilt.

Sea Studies

These sea studies were done on a woven background. The background was made of fabric strips that had Wonder-Under on them. The stripes were then pressed down and design was appliqued on them.
The beading was added as embellishment.

Pin Cushions

This collection of pin cushion was made for the Guild Boutique Shop. I used dessert cups that I had collected.

Seascapes from the Art Quilters

This creation was the gift of the Art Quilters of Gig Harbor. Each row was done by a different artist. The top one was done by me. It set the idea of the rows. The next one was done Kathy. The third one was done by Trisha, The fourth one was a Jonna creation. The fifth one was done by Lynn . The sixth one was done by Jan and the last one was done by Colene. It was our yearly challenge and it was a challenge getting all the bags around to all the girls.

 Chair Caddy

A nifty caddy that holds all the tools needed for wool applique. This was made from a kit, but I used my own fabrics. It is a handy thing to take to the Woolies meetings. Woolies meets once a month at Pam Binns House.
